I am new to the forum. I have some time off this summer and am contemplating a cross country trip. I am tentatively planning to leave Ct the beginning of June and head west. The plan is Wyoming or even the west coast and then back. I am thinking of taking a month total 8 to 10 days out and the same back with a few weeks in the mountains. Is there anyone who had done the trip? If so any suggestions. I am planning on stay at Motorcycle travel net homes as much as possible.  I will be traveling alone. I would love company if anyone has the time to come along.

Greetings.  New to the forum.  Checking it out get ideas and suggestions for my upcoming trip.  I live in Louisiana, and in July will be taking my '10 Electra Glide Ultra Limited on a 2-3 month journey around the good ol' US of A.  Initial plan is to try and visit every Capital City in the lower 48, along with as many National and State Parks I can get to along the way.  At this point don't have much of a plan, figure I'll wing it depending on weather and how my rear-end feels on a daily basis.  Might turn the handle bars North and catch some of Canada's majestic views as well.  Currently ordering a few items to make the journey better and when I return from Afghanistan in the beginning of July will attempt to outfit my bike myself (along with some good tunes and few beers to help the installations).  Did a short adventure a few years back on Honda Shadow 750 ACE, with no wind screen.  Did about 9 states in a couple of weeks, this time I will be a bit more comfortable! :) Looking forward to any suggestions/hints/items of interest I may want to know about.  I can't wait to put it in first and point it down the road!

Hi forum members

Just completed my 3 month tour around the USA clocking up just under 12,000 miles.  What an experience!!!!!

Bought a Goldwing in San Diego in April and rode it across the the south using route 8, 10, 90, 10, 98, & 41 all the way to Key West, Florida.  Then north via the Blue Ridge Parkway to Penn, then west on Route 50 to Denver, north to Rapid City (South Dakota), Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, California arriving in LA in July.  Shipping the bike back to NZ at the moment.

I stayed at a mixture of accommodations:  Motorcycle Travel Network members being the best there is, as well as friends & family along the way and a smatering of hostels, campgrounds, and motels.

While I agree the Goldwings are bloody heavy (I tipped it over twice) you can't fault them for comfort and reliability.  Other than a blowout in Jacksonville and tyres/oil change along the way, little happened to shake my confidence or dampen my holiday.

So thanks to those contributing to this site whose advice I sought, used and appreciated.  Happy to provide others any I can in return.

Who says you can't is way off the mark.  You can and should!!!

I have had a Garmin Zumo 550 for about 4 years and about 50k miles on my bikes. It was finally starting to give out. The unit worked OK but would no longer charge on the cradle, the screen was getting foggy from sitting in the sun and it just plain looked  like crap from all the abuse that it has taken. Anyway I called Garmin support about the issue of it not charging and they told me to send it back to Garmin and for $150 they could fix it. Well they did a lot better than fix it the day after they received they sent me an email saying they were sending me a refurbished unity. It arrived in a few days. It looks and works like brand new!   With service like that guess who will be getting my future GPS business?

On another note, I was going to reload all of my routes and stuff onto the new unit and set some new routes up for a trip I am planning. Not too excited about using MapSource again, I decided to check out the Harley Davidson Ride Planner....What a difference! It is so much easier to use than Garmin's archaic MapSource. Setting up, saving and downloading routes to my Zumo was a snap on the HD Ride Planner. So much easier than Mapsource and the routes once sent are easily adjusted after they have been saved.   Give it a try.

Hi all!
I decide to try to cross the Route 66 again next year.  The time is not set yet, but I am very much locking in the last week of June.
I still have to wait for vacation approval, and I will have a set day.
If you to tag along, let me know.  I will purchase and use the Route 66 Ready-to-go for Garmin GPS.
Wish me luck. :)
Nick
